Answer #1

a) What type of qualities do successful managers possess?

1. Ability to understand people:

Their motivations, strengths, weaknesses, constraints, etc. This will give you a good picture of your plan of getting things done by those people.

2. Trust:

You need to trust that your team can handle the tasks required to complete the project/job. If you lack this, you'll be a painful micromanager who hardly gets anything done and ends up doing everything himself, which is very ineffective.

3. Competence:

There's no substitute for being technically competent at your job. You need to have the superior technical competency to inspire respect and confidence among your team. People will pursue your direction only if they value you enough.

4. Relationships:

Good interpersonal relationships are extremely important to get stuff done by your team. It helps if you're perceived as a mature, friendly and jovial character. You should simply not pass on the pressure of the situation to your team, but work together with them, giving everyone a feel of you owning the result whether it is good or bad. Once the team does what you direct them to do, it's your job to own the result.

5. Being a winner:

People love working for winners and high performers. So be competitive, high performing and a person who loves to win. This gives you that charm which in conjunction with good interpersonal relationships helps you achieve that influencing ability to make people believe in your ways.

6. Building accountability:

You need to establish who's responsible for what and what decides the level of their performance very clearly at an early stage. This sets expectations and makes sure you don't get surprises from disappointed team members. You also need to communicate clearly and give clear directions on what is expected to be done/where you're all headed.

b) What is the value of having a formal and recent education in health organization management?

University has the function of taking you as far in theory as you can go. It’s not a design for practical living. The idea is that when you are familiar with the best investigations in science and art and history, and so on, you will gain a larger view of things and can see beyond the limits of a parochial outlook. You will be better at getting to the bottom of things.

This will mean your judgments are much better. You speak and write in a clear and useful way. You see beyond your nose. It helps everybody to have this academic journey.

c) How can we educate those who have been working in health organizations for a long time but have no recent formal education?

Online classes

There are a number of websites that offer online courses that charge you a certain amount of fee and some of them are entirely free of charge. Some websites also offer classes from authorized universities that can be easily accessed. They include almost each and every course from media and advertising, science and psychology, cooking and teaching, and whatnot.

Youtube

This is the age of information and technology, and it has given the world access to know about nearly everything they may want to know. Youtube, in today's age, has proven to be the best way to learn a number of things. Do you need to learn how to use MS Office? Fix your computer? Learn how to use vowels? Youtube has got you covered. There is bound to be a video that lays it all out for you.
