Introduction

If you could work in any organization in the world, what would it be? This exercise will give you the opportunity to do a "deep dive" into an organization that excites you. You can choose a for-profit, not-for-profit, or even a government entity.

  1. You will explore and study the organization's vision, mission, management, organizational structure, and environment.
  2. Then you will develop a company strategy and set goals, while considering which organizational structure will give you the greatest competitive advantage.
  3. You will use analytical thinking to inform your classmates about the organization.

Getting Started

You will start this project by picking an organization of interest that you want to know more about. Because you will need to get a good bit of information on this organization, pick an organization that you either have a personal connection to, or one that has a large amount of publically available information. The sky is the limit, and you are open to any and all suggestions.

Activity Steps

  • Introduction: Write 50 words that informs readers about the main points of the discussion. What is interesting to know based on your research?
  • Body 1: Write 100-150 words that define the overall operation of the company. What does it do? What is its vision? Mission? Values? Who are its primary competitors, and what is its position in the market? (Note that even non-profit organizations have competitors, or other organizations providing the same charity, and a position within that group of competitors.)
  • Body 2: Explore the organizational chart of the company NOTE: You must include the image of the organizational chart in your discussion . Find an organizational chart that outlines at least THREE-FIVE layers of management within the company. Discuss the functional role of each management level within the company.
  • Body 3: Find either an advertised job or a job description for at least THREE levels of managers within the organization NOTE: You must provide the link for the job descriptions: a first-line or supervisory manager, a middle manager, and an executive-level manager. Once you have job descriptions for all three levels of managers, in 150 - 200 words, compare the skills required in the job descriptions with the managerial skills outlined in your text. To what extent do you see different skills associated with different level jobs? To what extent are the skills required the same across all three levels of management?
  • Body 4: In 100 words, discuss the effect of maintaining ethical behaviors within the company and the impact on building social responsibility and maintaining brand image
  • Body 5: In 100 words, discuss the SWOT analysis of the company
  • Body 6: Based on your analysis of the company: what factors would you consider in starting a small-business? Specify at least THREE operational goals and state the type of planning process required to execute those goals and what decisions are essential to operating the business in this current economic condition. Identify the steps you deem necessary to selecting one alternative from among a set of alternatives NOTE: Use an example to help explain your point. 200-250 words

Answer #1

If I could work in an organization I would like to work for Haier Appliances which is a major appliances industry. It is a good company to work because of its continuous effort to make new innovations that will help people to have a comfortable life. It focuses more on customer satisfaction due to which it has emerged as a top brand in very limited time period.

The company is into manufacturing of white goods having manufacturing facilities all across South East & South Asia. It exports its product to Asia, Africa, and South America countries. Focusing on customer satisfaction and improvising the product as per market need has been the vision of the company, and they have done every step possible to make their product suitable for every range of customer. We can see this by their wide range of product which includes the Bottom Mounted Refrigerator where the freezer section is at the bottom so that people have to bend less. Their mission is to be the market leader and be the globally rank 1 appliance brand. Currently they are among the top players but the market is being led by LG and Samsung. They have been giving close competition to them for some years but the brand value of LG and Samsung beats Haier due to which it looses some of its sales.

This is the organization structure of Haier Appliances India Division

The overall authority is with the president who is responsible for board communication and strategy decision. And reporting to him is the director who looks after the operations of the country. There are respective domain head who report to director like manufacturing, Finance, HR & Sales. Each domain head has team of their own and their own organization structure and reporting hierarchy.

The company tries to hire quality people for the position and it expects people who will be problem solvers and be loyal to the company. These are the job description of the position of the company:

  1. Manufacturing Head :-
  • Position :- The position will be responsible for overall manufacturing operation in India. It requires handling multiple teams which support the operations. candidate should be smart, and have good problem solving skills. Practical approach towards facing crisis and good team player.
  • Qualification & Experience :- Min 10 years of managerial experience with qualification in Operations management and engineering from good institute.
  1. Quality Manager :-
  • Position :- The position is for leading the quality department of India operations. Pan India team will be reporting to the person. Travelling will be part of job. Should be able to handle team of 100 people.
  • Qualification :- 7 years of managerial experience. Graduation in mechanical engineering.
  1. Production Supervisor :
  • Position :- responsible for managing the production process of India facility. Should be result oriented person having good knowledge on assembly line manufacturing.
  • Qualification :- 4 years experience in production department. Diploma/ Degree in manufacturing.

Haier has always maintain strict ethical policy and it has always adhered to the same. Under no circumstances anyone working for the company is allowed to violate the ethical policy. their ethical policy consists of disciplinary terms, sexual harassment, data tampering, and code of conduct. The company tries very hard to maintain a good image in society as bad brand image can effect the sales. They are involved in many CSR activity and there is a dedicated amount for the activity which has to be spent. This crease a sense of value addition among people and the brand image becomes good.

The company major strength lies in the strong team it has , there are people who knows the market condition very well. The have a wide range of product which can target all segment of customer. The major weakness will be overcoming the cost associated with maintaining a large facility, if sales number goes down it will affect the financial numbers. They can target the export segment which is less from the facility. If the exports orders are met along with standards then it will boost the sales. The major threat lies in managing the government clearance as there are strict norms regarding environmental clearance.

Based on the analysis these three factors play a major role in starting a business:-

  1. The requirement of people:- this factor should always be kept in mind that what the customer needs and are the product available fulfilling the need. Is there any need of new product which can satisfy the need.
  2. The competition:- are there any competition in market, and can we fight with them.
  3. The funding :- from where will the funding requirements be fulfilled and how the cash-flow will be managed.

The basic operational goal required for a company are :-

  1. Sales Quantity :- The sales planning needs to be done rigorously as they will be the source of revenue. Region wise sales number has to be given to the people.
  2. Quality Parameters :- The quality standard needs to be set and it should be followed at all cost so that there is no complaints from customer.
  3. New Product development :- Development should be done on time so that the benefit could be taken. All the schedule of development should be planned in advance and it should be tracked timely.

From all these information we get to know how much detailed planning is required to run a business and how every thing should be linked to have a smooth operation. This are the factors which differentiate a small scale industry and a branded company. Small industries are more of people oriented where the top authority has to give decision on a matter where as a branded company is more of process oriented where there is guidelines for everything and people should follow the policies and procedures.
