Answer #1

The melting point of any substance usually occurs over a range called the 'melting point range'. If this range is more than 2o, the melting point range is said to be wide. This is because an impure substance melts at a temperature lower than that of a pure substance. Also presence of impurities widens the range of melting point of the substance.

So, it means that there are impurities present in the substance.

Hexachlorobenzene has a literature melting point of 231 ºC. What would be a reasonable result when melting an impure sample of hexachlorobenzene? It would start melting around 229 ºC and finish melting around 233 ºC. It would start melting around 225 ºC, and finish melting around 230º C. The impurity would melt at whatever temperature is normal for that impurity, but the hexachlorobenzene would melt right at 231 ºC . It would melt right at a temperature lower than the...

When performing a melting point on a solid compound, 2 melting point determinations were made. One sample, which was 1 mm in height in the capillary, possessed a melting point of 150-151°C. The other sample was 25 mm in height. What would you expect the approximate melting point to be for this 25 mm sample, if the heating rate for both samples was 2 degrees per minute? (Hint: use algebra to solve the mp range) 4.
