What is the relationship of the ratios of acetate to acetic acid of a 5mlL and 10mL of a buffer solution of NaOH and 5mL and 10mL of a buffer solution of HCl at the buffer limits. How does this relate to pKa, pH and what buffer solutions do?

Answer #1

In a solution of acetate and acetic acid, the relationship between their concentrations can be used to determine the pH of the resulting buffer solution, by means of the Henderson Hasselbach equation, where the acid pKa is also required:

pH = pKa + log [Acetate] / [Acid]

A buffer system is a balance between two weak substances conjugated to each other, and allows maintaining a relatively stable pH.
