A common illustration of the issues of work-life integration is the dilemma of those now described as the “sandwich generation”.

1.) Clearly defining what the term “sandwich generation” means; and,

2.) Ask what benefit he or she currently receives or would like to receive from the employer to alleviate the stress of the situation. Explain fully.

  • Identify at least one other option that employers currently provide that would benefit the interviewee given the situation in which he or she is involved.

Answering the first question as per Chegg Guidelines:

1.a) A sandwich generation is the generation of people who need to take care of their ageing parent on one hand and on the other, they need to bring up their own children. People in this generation are usually in their 30s – 40s. They are known as sandwich generation as they need to take care both of old age and of infant age. They need to provide financial, moral as well as physical support to both these generations who are at extreme ends.

b) The sandwich generation has to cater to the needs of both their ageing parents and their growing children. They also have to struggle hard to make a strong career for themselves at that instant. In such a scenario, maintaining work life balance can be quite taxing for the individuals and they may fall in the trap of stress. This stress can adversely impact their performance at the workplace and hence is not in favour of the company. Hence it has been seen that employers come with an array of benefits to solve stress issues and make life better for their employees. All these benefits have been developed with the objective of enhancing work life balance and easing out the stress of these employees, so that they can perform their best at the company. Some of such benefits are:

  • Telecommuting: Working from anywhere
  • Flexi-work hours: The employees can come to office and go from office anytime
  • Creche facility: The employees can leave their children in creche and can take them home, while leaving from the office
  • Gym and fitness center: This benefit facilitates the health and wellness of the employees
  • Education loan for kids: Companies come up with specially designed loans to aid the education of the employee’s children
