THE SCENARIO: Bradley is a 7 year-old boy, so according to his age, he is in between Piaget’s Preoperational Stage and Concrete Operations stage. His parents find out that you are taking Developmental Psychology: Lifespan and ask you to help them figure out how his cognitive abilities compare to those of other children his age.

First, you decide to do some activities with Bradley to see if he makes any conservation errors or other mistakes in his thinking. If he makes any of these errors, you will assume he’s probably still in the Preoperational Stage.

1)    What activity might you do with him (or what could you ask him) to see if he makes the error of centration?

2)    What would you do to see if he makes the error of irreversible thought (difficulty understanding reversibility)?

3)    What about the error of egocentrism?  

Bradley does not make any of the errors that you would expect of a child in the Preoperational Stage. Therefore, you decide to test his ability to engage in seriation and transitivity to see how much he knows from the Concrete Operations stage.

4)    What would you ask him to do to test his seriation ability?

5)    What would you ask him to do to test his transitivity ability?

6)    What might you ask him to determine if he is able to engage in abstract thinking? Hint: It's not until formal operations that children can usually think in this way, so you'll want to ask him a formal operations-like question.

1) Error of centration can be easily found, I will ask to him to narrate a story or ask him to listen, if he listens to be with focus and concentration, full eyes focused on me, he could easily perform any task given to him, else, he does whatever he wants, can't look into my eyes, can't sit straight, with this the error of centration can be found.

2) I will write the numbers from 1 to 10 and ask him to read the numbers forward first and then reverse, if he could easily read in reverse way like forward, instead if couldn't then it is an error

3) I will make Bradley to perform the puzzle task, he will be surrounded with puzzle and a right picture for that, if he picks the right  puzzle in relevant to the picture given, yes he is no longer egocentric.

4) To check his seriation ability, i will ask to arrange things in a particular order (Size, shape and position). Like,

  • Small to big, big to small
  • Tall to Short, Shot to tall,
  • Thick to thin, Thin to thick
  • Light to heavy, Heavy to Light etc...

5) I will simply ask him to playfully help me to arrange my bookshelf in order, if he arrange properly in height order wise, it means his transitive ability is increased due to logical thinking

6) To test his abstract thinking, i will just communicate with him about his school life, home and his likes, if he could easily understands, he will speak in a correct tense. If his thinking ability is normal, he could easily discriminate between what happens yesterday and what is doing now at present. He will easily get attached to the friendly communicator and performs all the given task.
