Klebsiella pneumoniae is not able to be gram stained (failed to pick up dye in gram stain test ) therefore called as gram negative organism.

Klebsiella - are rod shaped, nonmotile , gram negative , having a prominent polysaccharide capsule.

As all the members of klebsiella genus typically express 2 types of antigens on their cell surface which contribute to pathogencity. They are O antigen (lipopolysaccharides) and K antigen (capsular polysaccharides) . Around 77 K antigens and 9 O antigens are exist
