The Gumienny lab is trying to clone a gene that affects body size in the roundworm C. elegans. A mutation in this gene, called sma-12, makes small animals when homozygous. It was isolated in a screen that used the chemical mutagen ENU. sma-12 was mapped to Chromosome V (5). To more finely map the location to identify the causative mutation, they perform a two-factor mapping experiment with another Chromosome V-linked gene, unc-23, which has a known position on Chromosome V. This gene has an allele that, when homozygous, causes uncoordinated movement.
Use (-) for the mutants and (+) for the wild-type alleles.
What is the genotype of the mothers (write the genotype at both loci)?
What is the genotype of the fathers (write the genotype at both loci)?
e. You now take the F1 cross progeny males and cross them to true-breeding, homozygous sma-12 unc-23 mutant animals, and then you observe 1000 offspring. If the body size and movement traits were so closely linked that no recombination occurred, you would expect to count:

The recessive dumpy, dpy, mutants of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans have a compact body; the recessive uncoordinated, unc, mutants have defective movement coordination. When a dumpy, uncoordinated hermaphrodite (XX) is mated with a normal male (XO), the F1 male progeny all are uncoordinated and the hermaphrodites are not, but neither the males nor the hermaphrodites are dumpy. (Note: Hermaphrodites will out-cross preferentially to self-crossing.) A. Are these genes sex-linked or autosomal? Explain for each. Use proper gene and allele...
2.In Drosophila, yellow body is due to an X-linked gene that is recessive to the gene for gray body. (a) A homozygous gray female is crossed with a yellow male. The F1 are intercrossed to produce F2. Give the genotypes and phenotypes, along with the expected proportions, of the F1 and F 2 progeny. (b) A yellow female is crossed with a gray male. The F1 are inter- crossed to produce the F2. Give the genotypes and phenotypes, along with...
A mutation in the Drosophila bristle gene (fb) (which is X-chromosome linked) causes a recessive forked bristle phenotype (rather than the normal type of bristle). Another mutation in Drosophila autosomal body color gene (BR) causes a recessive brown color body (rather than the normal black body). A geneticist carried out the following cross: X+ / Y ; BR/br x X+/ Xfb ; BR/br If total of 240 F1 progeny were obtained, the “expected” numbers are: normal bristle male progeny -...
17. A diploid plant is a dihybrid for flower color (gene “R”)
and leaf size (gene “L”). Its
phenotype is red flowers and large leaves. This plant is crossed to
a tester plant (which has
white flowers and small leaves). The progeny is as follows:
23 Red, large
25 White, small
230 Red, small
235 White, large
What can be concluded about the linkage relationship of the loci in
the dihybrid parent?
A) Genes R and L are unlinked

Biol 210: Genetics. Assign. #1 #5) You are studying a gene for body colour in house flies. The wild-type allele (B) has a dark blue phenotype. In population screens you find 6 recessive mutants B' through B$ and establish homozygous strains, all of which have a pale blue phenotype. You cross each mutant strain to itself and to all the other mutant and wild type lines and observe the following results (+ = wild- type phenotype in F1, -= mutant...
"Ebony body, held-out wings and sepia eyes are ALL RECESSIVE AND ALL ON CHROMOSOME 3. The COEFFICIENT of COINCIDENCE for chromosome 3 is 0.5. A homozygous ebony male is mated to a homozygous held out wing and sepia eyed female. The F1 are wild-type. An F1 female is test crossed to a fly that is homozygous for all three recessive alleles and they produce 1000 progeny. If ebony and held-out are separated by 12 map units, and held-out and sepia...
In beetles, a gene coding for body color and a gene coding for bristle length are located on the same chromosome. Black (B) is dominant over grey body (b) and long bristles (s) are recessive to short bristles (S). A beetle that is heterozygous for black body and short bristles is mated with one that has a grey body and long bristles. What are the genotypes of the parents? ____________ ____________ Assume that the B allele is linked with the...

The genes for sepia eye color, short bristles, and dark body coloration are on the same chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster. Each gene has two alleles: wild type, which is dominant, or mutant, which is recessive. se+ is dominant and causes red eyes; se is recessive and causes sepia eyes sb+ is dominant and causes long bristles; sb is recessive and causes short bristles b+ is dominant and causes gray body coloration; b is recessive and causes dark...
In Drosophila (fruit flies) the genes how, dumpy and ebony are located on chromosome 3. LOF = loss of function. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in ebony have dark black bodies. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in dumpyhave truncated (short) wings. Flies homozygous for a partial LOF mutation (some gene product made but significantly less than normal) in how have wings that will not fold down (held out wings; that's...
