An electron beam (?̅ 0 = 16 ???) is being used to irradiate a malignancy on the cheek. To reduce unnecessary dose to the oral cavity, lead shielding has been placed behind the cheek. It was determined that the dose on the inner surface of the cheek (at the interface with the lead shielding) is 41% greater with the shielding in place compared to the dose if no shielding was used. What is the thickness of the cheek?

Internal shields are used to protect other tissues from irradiation during radiotherapy. In the given case, an electron beam of 16MeV is used to treat the malignacy on the cheek. So, the remaining healthy tissues are required to be prevented from irradiation. A lead shield is used for this. The thickness of the shield depends on the energy of the electron beam. Thickness of 1 mm of lead is required as shielding for every 2 MeV
of electron energy. For 16MeV of electron beam 8mm thickness of lead shield is used.
