Ultrahard and superhard materials are incomepressible solids with high hardness values that can rival that of diamond. They are used in a range of applications from polishing, cutting, to medical implants and heavy industry. Given the concepts you learned in this course, if you were asked to design a material with exceptionally high hardness values, what would be your strategy?
Hardness is a measure of the resistance to plastic deformation induced by either mechanical identation, scratching or abrasion.
Nano-hardness test uses minor loads of about 1 nano-Newton followed by precise measuring depth of indentation. We use following techniques to find the hardness. They are:
Approach:
We require materials with exceptionally high hardness for different applications. So first to do any one of the hardness tests mentioned above. Mostly we use Rockwell hardness test for finding hardness of the material.
1)Rockwell hardness test:
The hardness of a material by this Rockwell hardness test method is measured by the depth of Penetration of the indentor. The depth of Penetration is inversely proportional to the hardness. Both ball or diamond cone types of indenters are used in this test. There are three scales on the machine for taking hardness readings.
Scale “A” with load 60 kgf or 588.4 N and diamond indenter is used for performing tests on thin steel and shallow case hardened steel.
Scale “B” with load 100 kgf or 980.7 N and 1.588 mm dia ball indenter is used for performing tests on soft steel, malleable iron, copper and aluminum alloys.
First minor load is applied to over come the film thickness on the metal surface. Minor load also eliminates errors in the depth of measurements due to spring of the machine frame or setting down of the specimen and table attachments. The Rockwell hardness is derived from the measurement of the depth of the impression.
EP = Depth of penetration due to Minor load of 98.07 N.
Ea = Increase in depth of penetration due to Major load.
E = Permanent increase of depth of indentation under minor load at 98.07 N even after removal of Major load.

Project Background In a recent regular quarterly meeting in June, several members of the Board of Directors of Crystal Fashion Group (CFG) have a big concern on the future business position and outlook of the company in view of the long-term trade dispute between USA and China. Also, the rising costs of manufacturing in China are eroding off the profit margin and undercut CFG’s competitiveness in the market. Seeing that quite a number of fellow fashion/ garment manufacturers have already...

St. Francis Assisted Living Facility St. Francis Medical Center, a 450 bed rehabilitation non-profit hospital began to see a significant decline in admissions. St. Francis' mission focuses on inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation of the severely injured and catastrophically ill. While the patient census varied from month to month, it appeared to the St. Francis Board of Trustees that the inpatient population was slowly but steadily declining. The hospital's market researchers reported that fewer people were being severely injured due to...
Title: Partners Health Care Systems (PHS): Transforming Health Care Services Delivery through Information Management According to government sources, U.S. expenditures on health care in 2009 reached nearly $2.4 trillion dollars ($2.7 trillion by the end of 2010).[1] Despite this vaunting national level of expenditure on medical treatment, death rates due to preventable errors in the delivery of health services rose to approximately 98,000 deaths in 2009.[2] To address the dual challenges of cost control and quality improvement, some have argued...

case (i.e. how the key concepts you have learned in this topic is
applied in this case study?)
Culture and Cross-Cultural Risk
Culture is the values, beliefs, customs, arts, and other
products of human thought and work that characterize the people of
a given society. Cross-cultural risk arises from a situation or
event in which a cultural misunderstanding puts some human value at
stake. Values and attitudes are shared beliefs...
