write a one-page paper explaining how World War I brought about the birth of modern warfare while still holding on to vestiges of the past
In modern warfare the First World War produced many developments in science and technology. Such developments changed the essence of warfare including tactics and battle strategies. Since the war, scientists and inventors on both sides have worked to develop military technology to give their side an advantage in the fight. World War I was the first aircraft battle in which it was used. Aircrafts were originally used to track enemy forces. They were however used to drop bombs on soldiers and towns by the end of the war. They also had machine guns fixed which were used to shoot down other aircraft.
Tanks were first used in World War I. These armoured vehicles
were used to cross through the trenches of "No Man's Land." They
had machine guns and cannon mounted on them. The first tanks were
inaccurate and difficult to steer but by the end of the war, they
became more successful.
Most of the war was waged along the western front using trench
warfare. Both sides dug long lines of trenches that helped shield
the soldiers from artillery and gunfire. The area between the enemy
trenches was called the Land of No Man. Trench warfare has
triggered a prolonged stalemate between the two sides. None of the
sides won territory but they lost millions of soldiers on both
sides.
Artillery-During World War I, large weapons, called artillery,
were developed, including anti-aircraft weapons to shoot down enemy
planes. Many of the war's deaths were inflicted using artillery. A
few large artillery guns could fire nearly 80 miles of
shells.
Machine gun-During the war machine gun was developed. It had made
getting around much lighter and faster.
Flame throwers-The German Army on the west front used flame
throwers to drive the enemy out of their trenches.
