The variance or standard deviation tell about the population tell you that how various sub-population are spread out from the mainpopulation. The mean can tell you only average or mean of various sub-population. The variance or standard deviation tell you deviation of data points from the mean.

The mean and median are two statistical approaches that are use when viewing a histogram.
