Is the Calvin Cycle only present in phototrophic organisms? Why or why not?
Calvin cycle is a carbon fixation process which uses atmospheric carbon dioxide to synthesise sugar. It takes place in the stroma of chloroplast of plants. It does not require the presence of light. So can occur even in dark and in daylight as well.
But Calvin cycle is dependent upon the product of light reaction. Light reaction lead to the formation of ATP and NADPH by using solar energy. Photosystem 2 present in the thylakoid membrane absorbs solar energy and shows electron excitation. This excited electron if then passed on to the other complexes and ultimately to oo photosystem 1 and NADP+ which gets reduced to form NADPH.
If light would not have been there, then light reactions will not take place and there will be no formation of high energy molecules like ATP and NADPH. Without these molecules, Calvin cycle will not occur.
We can conclude that Calvin cycle is present only in phototrophic organisms because it requires product from light reaction.

Why is it possible for the Calvin cycle to occur in the dark? A. The Calvin cycle uses energy stored previously during the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. B. It is not possible for any part of photosynthesis to occur without light. C. None of the products of the light-dependent reactions are involved in the Calvin cycle. D. The Calvin cycle obtains energy from sugars made previously by the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis.
