A buffer contains significant amounts of ammonia and ammonium chloride.

Part A: Enter a net ionic equation showing how this buffer neutralizes added aqueous acid (HI).

Express your answer as a chemical equation. Identify all of the phases in your answer.

Part B: Enter a net ionic equation showing how this buffer neutralizes added aqueous base (CsOH).

Express your answer as a chemical equation. Identify all of the phases in your answer.

Answer #1

PART A

In Given buffer solution, acidic component is NH 4 + and basic component is NH3 .

After additon of strong acid (HI) to buffer solution, NH3 reacts with it and produces NH 4 + and H2O.

Net ionic equation for reaction of strong acid ( HI) with buffer solution is as shown below.

NH3 (aq) + H3O  + (aq)   NH 4 + (aq) + H2O (l)

Some times above reaction is written as, NH3 (aq) + H + (aq)   NH 4 + (aq)

PART B

After additon of strong base ( CsOH) to buffer solution, NH 4 + reacts with it and produces NH3 and H2O.

Net ionic equation for reaction of strong base ( CsOH) with buffer solution is as shown below.

  NH 4 + (aq) + OH - (aq) NH3 (aq) + H2O (l)
