An uncharged parallel-plate capacitor with only air between the plates has C◦ = 0.600 mF. It is connected to an EMF source with E = 6.00 V.

a) How much charge Q◦ accumulates on the cap, and how much energy is stored, U◦?

b) The capacitor is discharged back to zero, then filled with a dielectric material that brings its capacitance up to C1 = 1.950 mF. What is the value of κ1 for the dielectric material? When connected to the same EMF source, what charge Q1and energy U1 are stored this time?

c) In a separate experiment, the air-only capacitor is charged to Q◦with E and then disconnected, so it retains the charge on its plates. A dielectric material with κ2 = 4.87 is inserted into the capacitor while it remains charged. What is the new capacitance, C2? What ∆V exists across this capacitor after the material fills the space between the plates? How much stored energy does the cap hold, U2?
