Both epistasis and gene suppression lead to an alteration in the transcription of a gene. The alteration in the transcription of gene is caused due to chemical modification of the gene. The chemical modifications include addition and removal of chemical group like methyl, acetyl, phosphate, hydroxyl, alkyl, ribose, glucose, ubiquitin etc. Different types of chemical modifications have different effect on the expression of gene.

Epistasis is the type of gene expression in which the expression can be increased or decreased but in case of gene supression, the expression always decreases.
