The unique characterstics of a product determines how it will be transported from one place to the other. These specific characterstics may be related to the bulk, weight per unit volume, cost or inherent nature like perishability and shelf life of te product. The decision for transportation is taken, keeping in mind, all these factors. For example, a heavy, bulky but low cost item such as iron ore is better transported on a ship, because of the low cost per unit weight of the commodity that makes any other mode of transport unfeasible. On the other hand, high value items such as diamonds and precious metals need to be transported through air owing to the high cost, high risk and security issues which surround such product by its nature.
