The neurotransmitters released from the postsynaptic complex binds to the receptors on the subsequent neurons and thus transmitting the stimulus.

After the stimulus is passed on to the next neurons, the action potential is terminated by digestion of the neurotransmitters. For example the enzyme acetylcholinesterase digests acetylcholine and hence terminates it's action.
