With all these H+ ions built up in the periplasmic space we make our way to a large protein complex just ahead in the membrane. As we get closer we can see that H+ ions are following through this complex and causing it to spin. The energy produce by this spinning is enough to add an inorganic phosphate group to ADP molecule. Some decides to start counting the H+ ions and notices that for every 10 that flow through this complex 3 ATP are made and every 6 that follow through produce 2 ATP.

Name of the large complex is ATP synthase

Only 2 ATP are made by substrate level phosphorylation

From glycolysis to TCA total 10 NADH (2 in glycolysis, 2 when pyruvate oxidized into acetyl CoA and 6 in TCA from 2 acetyl CoA molecule) are produced

Only 2 FADH2 are produced in TCA from 2 molecules of acetyl CoA

A total of 38 ATP are produced by oxidative phosphorylation

Maximum theoretical yield for 1 glucose is 38 ATP.
