In second law of thermodynamics QHrepresents the magnitude of heat transfer between the cyclic device and high temprature medium (at temperature TH ) . And QL represents magnitude of heat transfer between cyclic device and low temprature medium at temprature TL . Both of these quantities are always positive quantities.

Second law states that " it is impossible to construct an engine which working in a cycle shall produce no effect other than transfer of heat from a colder to hotter body. Hence a net amount of work should be done .and this work is given by :

Wnet out = QH- QLL for a heat engine.
