Radiotelegraphy is the transmission of the same dot-dash message by radio waves as telegraphs use. Transmitters were known as spark-gap machines, at the turn of the century. They were developed mainly for communication from ship to shore and from ship to ship. This type of radiotelegraphy allowed for easy two-point communication. But, as we know it today, this was not public radio broadcasting. Wireless communications use increased after proving to be successful in communicating for sea rescue work. A variety of ocean liners soon also mounted wireless devices.
In 1915, speech was first broadcast from New York City to San Francisco and across the Atlantic Ocean, via radio across the continent. Five years later, KDKA-Pittsburgh from Westinghouse broadcast the Harding-Cox election results and began a daily radio program schedule. Commercial radiotelephony service was opened in 1927 which connected North America and Europe. The first phone call was made worldwide in 1935, using a mixture of wire and radio circuits.
De Forest grew up in Talladega, Alabama, where his father was the white president of a college for slaves who had been recently freed. While de Forest owned more than 300 patents, his opponents believed others had already discovered most of his "inventions."
Armstrong was declared a genius whose inventions had made modern radio possible, a flamboyant man with a fondness for fast cars and a love for great heights. But others have challenged his patents, including Lee de Forest. Armstrong spent a great deal of his life in court, embroiled in legal action.
Guglielmo Marconi, the "Wireless" telegraphy pioneer born in Italy. In 1896 Marconi took out a patent on his unique system for transmitting the dots and dashes of telegraph messages through the air, and in 1899 the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company was introduced in America. Wireless messages ("Marconigrams") were soon sent between ships at sea and wireless stations in Marconi on the East Coast.
