If you add an excess amount of bromine to water, does the water become very acidic? I got an pH value of 2 but I am confused about the fact that bromine is able to form large amounts of hbr without any catalyst.

Answer #1

The addition of bromine to water forms a weak acid called Hypobromous acid and HBr. However this is a weak acid, strong acid combination so in theory large quantity of Bromine in water can form a solution with the pH you mentioned

Equation of formation: Br2 + H2O HBr + HBrO
