There are several types of business communication. The following part of the answer describes several parts of business communication and how it can be used in several context of businesses.

a) Upward communication - A message which is being sent to an individual who is up in the hierarchy of an organisation. This means when a message is sent from a subordinate to its manager is known as upward communication. Subordinates have better knowledge about the employee performance. This method of communication helps the manager to get a view of performance of all the employees.

b) Downward communication - A message which is being sent to an individual who is at a lower position in the organisation hierarchy is considered as downward communication. This means when a manager sends any message to the subordinate, it is known as the downward communication. This type of method of communication is important because it helps the manager to communicate the mission and goals of the organisation to the subordinates.

c) Lateral communication - The communication which takes place through email, or face to face among the co-workers is termed as lateral communication. When a reviewer wants any clarification from the employee who has done the work, lateral communication is being performed. Furthermore, team leaders often mail to the entire team regarding a team meeting which is also considered as lateral communication.

d) External communication- A message which is being sent to the external stakeholders of an organisation like client, customers or suppliers is considered as external communication. Advertising the product or service of an organisation is done through external communication method.

Advantages of one over the other

a) Downward and upward communication are considered to be formal in nature and needs to be done using several steps. On the other hand, if lateral communication is taken in to consideration, it is informal in nature this method of communication is simple than the other two.

b) Since, in lateral communication method face to face communication is acceptable it is considered as faster in nature than upward or downward communication.

c) If downward communication is taken in to consideration it can be seen that this method of communication is more disciplined than upward communication. Explanation of goal takes place in downward communication which does not exist in upward communication.

d) In case of upward communication feedback of employee performance provided by the subordinates to the manager is faster than any other methods of communication.

e) In lateral communication the efficiency of cooperation is more than any other methods of communication.
