Environmental scanning is the method in which a company gathers
and analyses data on its external environment on a continuous
basis. When making marketing decisions, there are six main
categories of environmental data to consider. These are social
forces, demographic forces, economic forces, forces of technology,
political and legal forces, and competitive forces.
SOCIAL FORCES: Potential customers include both car dealerships and
private customers such as families in the automotive detailing
business.
ECONOMIC FORCES: For the high and low points of buying during
the year, the automotive industry needs to be evaluated. For
starters, people don't tend to buy new cars during December,
causing the industry to slow down. This also affects the number of
customers in the detailed business.
POLITICAL AND LEGAL FORCES: Car detailing should be aware of
environmental and zoning laws that may vary from one state to
another.
COMPETITIVE FORCES: Competition from foreign firms is relatively
low, as the automotive detailing business is a personal service.
There may be competition from other companies in the area,
however.
When increasing customers in the automotive detailing business,
there are several marketing procedures to consider. Getting started
is particularly difficult for smaller businesses. Personal selling
is one of the most important marketing tools used. Sending a person
with fliers from one car dealer to the next is a good way to
promote the business.
In the automotive detailing industry, the external environment
affects advertising, as automotive detailers are dependent on car
dealerships. If business is slow for dealerships, the detailed
business will be hurt.
If there is a lot of competition in the area, the company will have
to focus on marketing their business over the others. A company's
size and credibility can also affect the company.
There are many marketing factors that can affect the operation of
the automotive industry.
