a biologist wants to test a pesticide to see at what concentration it is most effective. He wants to test concentrations at 1, 10, 100 and 1000 g/L. What will be his positive control, and what will be his negative control?
A negative control is the one in which all the components of a reaction are added except the component which is to be tested. In this case the pesticide is to be tested. So this reaction tube will contain all the components but not the pesticides. This tube will give us no result with respect to the the working of pesticides.
A positive control is the one which contains all the components of a reaction. It also contains the component which is to be tested. To this tube will contain all the the reagent used in the reaction along with the pesticides to be tested. But now we do not know the concentration of pesticides to be added. So we can use another pesticides whose concentration is known to us. This reaction tube will give us positive result.

POLICILJELT . SV l . A biologist wants to estimate the number of white rhinos still alive in the wild. The natural habitat of the white rhino is too large to survey, so he divides the entire habitat into 100 units and randomly selects 10 of them to observe. After spending 1 day in each of these 10 units, he observes an average of M = 3 rhinos per unit of habitat, with a standard deviation of 1.3 rhinos. If...
A blood test is developed to screen for a certain type of allergy in human beings. Individuals who have the allergy tend to have elevated serum concentration of the allergen-specific antibody. In particular, among these allergic individuals, their allergen-specific antibody concentrations follow the Normal distribution with an average of 400 units per litre (U/L) and a standard deviation of 80 U/L. For individuals without the allergy, their allergen-specific antibody concentrations also follow the Normal distribution, but with an average of...

Question 10: (10 marks) blood test is 95 percent effective in detecting a certain disease when it is, in fact, also yields a "false positive" result for 10 percent of the healthy persons A laboratory present. However, the test tested. (That is, if a healthy person is tested, then, with probability 0.10, the test result will imply he or she has the disease.) If 0.7 percent of the population actually has the disease, what is the probability a person has...
Dr. Kruger wants to understand what treatments are most effective for treating anxiety. She is most interested in understanding how drug treatment interacts with small interventions in the real-world. She recruited 400 participants for her study and randomly assigned half of them to a new antidepressant drug, and the other half to a placebo. She also took each of those groups and randomly assigned participants to either a gratitude journal, daily mindfulness practice or nothing. After 10 weeks, she measured...
1. Max needs to estimate the protein concentration of a cell lysate. He first read the absorbance of 100 uL aliquots of his sample at 280 nm and calculated an average absorbance of 0.623. Next, using this information he plans to dilute his sample for a Lowry assay. a) Based upon the A280 readings, what was the estimated concentration of Max’s cell lysate? b) Max wants to make 1:2, 1:4, 1:10, and 1:20 dilutions of his cell lysate. Describe what...
Question 3 (1 point) Your doctor wants you to test for a disease that affects 0.1% of the population. The test is known to have a false positive rate of 1% and a false negative rate of 5%. If you test positive on the test, what is the probability that you are truly affected by the disease? Express your answer as a percentage (between 0 and 100), with 1 decimal precision.
8. Your nearsighted brother has a far point of 4 m and he wants to see an object 15 m away clearly Assume he will wear his glasses 2 cm in front of his eyes. What is the focal distance (in meters) of the glasses he needs? Hint: Draw a diagram of your brother, the glasses, the object and the image. Use the diagram to figure out whether the glasses have to be diverging or converging. 9. Consider question 8....
The owner of an Italian restaurant has redesigned the menu and wants to see if the amount customers spend (on average) will be greater with the new menu. He records the sales the week before the change and the sales the week after the change. Using the sample means and standard deviations for the two weeks, which statistical inference should he perform? A. a t test for paired samples (using differences) B. the owner should compute the mean dining bill...
