In our chemistry class, we calculate the van't hoff i factor and use a range when applicable.

For example:

RbI: i = 2

KCN: 2 < i < 3

H4XeO6: 1 < i < 2

FeBr3: 4 < i < 5

Na2(C2O4): 3 < i < 4

I do not understand how to get these, nor do I understand what the "i" is accounting for?

Does H+ count into the overall i? Does OH- count in the overall i?
