Can someone read the philosophical statement down below and thoroughly state what you agree or disagree with, and why? Please go in depth.
- For the Ancient Greeks the Oracle of Delphi was the most powerful person in the world. People from all over the world would come to her for advice. The Oracle of Delphi was the high priestess, a Pythia, who would breathe in fumes from the sacred sanctuary on Mt. Parnussus and go into a trance in which the god Apollo would speak prophesies through her. Her prophesies were for anyone, to the most powerful rulers to the lowest peasants. The Pythia was highly respected and was the bridge between the gods and mortals. Even though Apollo wasn’t considered the most powerful or favorite god, he was still the son of Zeus and to be in communication with such a divine being encouraged mortal’s belief in the Olympians.
The most interesting aspect of the Oracle of Delphi was the parallel between her and Jesus Christ. The Pythia was the bridge between the gods and mortals, just as Jesus in Christianity is considered the bridge between God the father, who may be a parallel to Zeus, and humanity. Both Jesus and the Oracle of Dephi are representations of children of the most powerful being in the world and both are prophets. It is interesting that even before the creation of Christianity, humans were already idolizing a mortal that bridged the gap between the heavens and earth.
Another interesting characteristic of the Oracle of Delphi is that she was a woman. Becaue Apollo was a god, one might assume his medium to speak to mortals would also be a man. The fact the Oracle was a woman shows that ancient people respected women a great deal. Because the Pythia had to be chaste and leave behind her family and husband once she became the Oracle, it can be assumed that she became similar to the other virgin goddesses such as Artemis and Athena. Giving up her sexuality and legacy showed how dedicated the Pythia was to her beliefs.
All in all I personally do not believe in the Oracle of Delphi’s magic powers. Her messages were extremely vague so anyone can interpret them however they wanted to. The Pythia was the first fortune teller; it was easy for her “prophesies” to come true and if they didn’t, there was a mistake on the interpreter’s end.
One of the most important things about different societies in the world is that they were dominated by men and most of the time it was men who held more powerful positions. However, few societies were able to raise women to the highest positions such as the priestess of Apollo, Pythia who is also considered to be the equal of Jesus Christ. Both were considered prophets who brought messages from God to human beings. Secondly, Pythia’s message was for everyone unlike some priests who bring messages only to the kings, thus she remained a bridge between god and people. The issue however, was that not all those that received the message understood them or interpreted them and this doesn’t mean that the messenger was wrong. Thus, the most important messages are women empowerment, God-human connectedness and the messengers who brings message from God which were all universal across the world.
