A 179.4-N bird feeder is supported by three cables as shown in the figure below. Find the tension in each cable.

Let, L and R be the tension in left and right cables respectively.

First considering vertical direction,

Lsin60 + Rsin30 = 179.4

0.866L + 0.5R = 179.4 ........ (1)

Now, horizontal direction

Lcos60 = Rcos30

0.5L = 0.866R

L = 1.732R

Substituting in (1)

0.866(1.732R) + 0.5R = 179.4

R = 89.70 N (Ans)

L = (1.732) 89.70 = 155. 37 N
