Flexural Test is useful for determining the Flexural Strength of a material. It determines the ability of a material to resist failures arising out of bending.

The Rupture Modulus or Flexural Strength is determined from this test.

The apparatuses required are:

i) a specimen rod made of the material to be tested for flexural strength,

ii) clamping rods to hold the specimen tightly at two ends,

iii) Universal Testing Machine (UTM) capable of applying a tensile load uniformly from the two ends

The detailed procedure is as follows:

i) The number of loading points must be decided first. More loading points lend more stability but also require more clamping rods.

ii) The specimen must be carefully placed, ensuring that it is carefully clamped at all the loading points and at the ends.

iii) Next, the loading points of the specimen must be brought in contact with the UTM load testing points.

iv) A gauge length of the specimen is predecided.

v) The UTM must be connected with the computer in order to record all necessary values (applied load, true stress, etc.).

vi) The load is applied uniformly by the UTM on the test specimen.

vii) All the recorded values must be meticulously observed. Note down the value at failure at the point when the test specimen breaks under tensile stress.

viii) With the recorded values, perform all necessary calculations to determine the Flexural Strength.

L is predecided on the specimen. The values of P, b and d are all noted down experimentally.

Then all the values are placed in the equation.

Thus we calculate the Flexural Strength or Rupture Modulus of a material.
