Will people spend less on health care if their health insurance requires them to pay some part of the cost themselves? An experiment on this issue asked if the percentage of medical costs that is paid by health insurance has an effect both on the amount of medical care that people use and on their health. The treatments were four insurance plans. Each plan paid all medical costs above a ceiling. Below the ceiling, the plans paid 100%, 75%, 50%, or 0% of costs incurred. Identify the design of a randomized comparative experiment suitable for this study. a. Divide the subjects into two groups. Assign the two higher paying insurance plans to one group and the two lower paying plans to the other group. Then, compare the amount spent on health care by each group. b. Assign the subjects to four groups randomly with equal number of subjects in each group. Provide a different insurance plan to each group. Then, compare the amount spent on health care. c. Assign the 100% insurance plan to all the subjects and record the amount spent on health care. Perform the same exercise for the remaining three insurance plans. Compare the amount spent on health care for each plan. Step 2: Identify the correct statement with reference to the experiment. a. No difficulties can arise in the experiment. b.
