1) The ways that enable prokaryotes to survive in an extreme environment include,

  • Formation of endospores
  • Rapid multiplication
  • Presence of thick cell wall that protects against osmotic movement of substances

2) Three ways that microorganisms in soil contribute to ecosystem as a whole include,

  • Decomposition of dead organic matter
  • Role in nitrogen and carbon cycle
  • Maintaining soil fertility and preventing leeching

3) Endospore forming bacterial genera include clostridium and bacillus. These bacteria form endospores during adverse environmental conditions and these spores can remain dormant for many years and cause diseases when suitable host is found.

4) Coliforms are the most commonly occurring bacteria in the intestines of animals. So, their presence is an indicator of water quality and fecal contamination of water.
