Compare and contrast two theories that explain gender inequality. Do these theories consider that gender inequality may be a by-product of biological development? How much of the differences between the genders do you think could be explained by biology?
Gender Inequality says that men and women are not equal. Gender of a person affects the life experiences of that person. Gender inequality impacts the sex ratio of a country. It also affect women's health and their educational level. There are following theories which are related with gender inequality:-
1. Structural Functionalist Perspective- It talks about pre-industrial time. It says that division of labour is based on gender. It says that women are better options for caring of children. They are better option in nursing small kids. Men should be held responsible for the accomplishment of materialistic needs.
2. Conflict perspective:- It says that women are inferior outside home. It depicts the value of women at home only so that the stereotypical dominance of men in outside world can be confirmed.
3. Symbolic Interaction Perspective:- It says that women are better in nurturing and supportive role. They provide better support at emotional level. Men are better in instrumental role. They are considered as suitable for target oriented roles.
When we study these theory then we find that these have been originated due to own terns and conditions. These seem to show superiority of males only. These also seem to bind women in a fix role. This approach is not good.
These seem to be byproduct of biological development. Women have been considered physically weak and that is why a view of their functions in protective environment have been supported despite of their immeasurable capabilities.
Biology does not distinguish men and women based on the capabilities. It does not produce any discrimination based on stereotypical thoughts. Society and pre-existed belief system seems to be dominating here. This should be avoided in determining the roles of males and females in society.
