Mendel’s second law of independent assortment is equivalent to metaphase I of meiosis in which non-homologous chromosomes align randomly at the equatorial plate. They are ready to be attached to spindle fibers and pulled in anaphase I. During anaphase I, non-homologous are randomly segregated to the different poles of the cell. Mendel’s second law explains the behavior of non-homologous chromosomes.
