QUESTION 1 [30 MARKS]
Helium gas (A) and Nitrogen gas (B) are diffusing in counter diffusion through a straight glass tube of 2 ft long with an inside diameter of 0.08 ft at 29 °C and 101.32 kPa. Both ends of tube are connected to large mixed chamber and the pressure is kept constant at 20 kPa and 6.666 kPa in the other chamber.

a) Predict the diffusivity of He diffusing into N2 using Chapman-Enskog method.
(13 Marks)

b) Based on the diffusivity obtained in (a), calculate the diffusion rate of He in
i. kg mol/mm2.s
ii. kg mol/s
(9 Marks)

c) Calculate the diffusion rate of N2 in kg/m2.hr for the mixed chamber operated from 1.00 pm until 2.30 pm.
