What is the right age for representing computer technology to children?
Children as young as two to three years of age can have meaningful interactions with a PC. It should be restricted to few minutes per day. Their engagement begins when they cross three years and are ready to go to school. They enjoy learning alphabets, games, drawing etc. After five years the kids are able to operate keys, mouse properly on their own. They also do their homework through it. They need to be well trained on rules of using internet. Till age of 7, adult supervision is mandatory during use. But as the kids are enter 8 till 12 years they can be allowed to operate computer on their own after putting filter in browsing, with an adult around to watch, as kids want privacy. They should be educated in online interactions. Teenagers require more freedom so parent can check their log history to know they are safe. They need to work on school projects thus need to work on their own PC. They should be always reminded on safety rules, choices and family expectations.
Children cannot be stopped from using computers as it will make them backward. But excessive use has been linked to obesity, vision problems, tumors, addiction and autism. Thus, parents should be well aware of pros and cons of using computers by children thus should develop a routine for them to follow.
There should be a techno-agreement on usage, limits, and accepted behaviors for all family members. The children and every family member should be asked to take many breaks to exercise physically and lower eyestrain. Comfortable seating should be provided where computers are used. Putting internet filters for managing children accessibility to digital content. Educate children not to tell personal details to strangers avoid pressing on popups, take parental permission for downloading any content from internet.
Making the Right Decision for Your Family
There is not set age for children to be represented to computers. The physical skills of child may develop but using also depends on the learning curve of child. But introducing at a young age is better. They can learn better and inculcate healthy and safe habits to use technology. But playing with friends and real interactions should be given highest priority.
