  1. A patient is to receive 1,200,000 units of penicillin G potassium every 4 hours. If 1 unit of penicillin G potassium (C16H17KN2O4S mw = 372) equals 0.6 μg, how many mmol of K+ will the patient receive in 24 hours?

Answer #1

This exercise is solving by extrapolation. To start you need to calculate the amount of units at day. In one day there are 24 hours and there is given 1200000 each 4 hours. The amount of units in a day is calculated by rule of three.

x=7200000units

Next step you need to calculate the amounts of µg in a day which is its mass of penicillin G

Then I have to calculate the mol number of penicillig G this mass is

1.0 mol of penicillin G contains 1.0 mol of K+ and 0.012mols of penicillinG has 0.012mols of K+ that is the amount of K+ the patient receives in a day.

npenicillin G= 12.0mmol
