What a person is being paid in monetary terms is a very important factor for motivating an employee to work better, but it is not the only factor that can motivate an employee or demotivate him from working. There are many other factors than his pay which can bring the motivation in him. The employee is the main source of productivity and growth in an organization and keeping him motivated and committed to his work at all times is very essential for best results. Salary cannot be increased at all times keeping in mind the budget and financial limitations and company policies. Hence other factors than the pay are identified for motivating the employees to work efficiently and improve their performance with time.
Non-monetary benefits that will make the working or employee flexible, easy and attractive for him can be given him. These may include flextime, paid leaves, time off, free meals, discounted parking, metering programs, free membership in clubs and gyms, childcare, vacations and retirement benefits. These are all incentives where money is not being paid directly to employees but can keep them motivated with the ease they allow for employees to work. For example, having a flex time to work and not a 9-5 fixed working hour can allow the employee to work at his own ease and free time and thus allow him to deliver results more efficiently.
Other non-financial rewards that can motivate employees are the appreciation, acknowledgement and recognition. They satisfy the self-actualization needs of a person and increase his morale. All these feelings will keep him happy can motivate him to do better at work. An appreciation of the results he is showing at work, words like 'well done' or 'thank you' can boost his morale to a high level motivating him to give the same level of performance or do better in the field to keep getting appreciations further.
The relationship and interaction one has with his colleagues and managers can also be a cause of keeping him happy and satisfied at work and thus motivate him to work better. A person spends most of his time at work. If he does not get healthy and happy working conditions there his enthusiasm and interest to work in the office will decrease which will affect his work negatively. Thus keeping a friendly environment among the employees is a factor that can increase motivation to work.
It is also important that the culture and origin of the employee are respected and valued at work. The culture at the office should be such that values employees from all genders, ages, religion, cultures and origins. being disrespectful or discriminating an employee can demotivate him to work efficiently. Even if an employee is not the victim of discrimination and sees other people facing it, he can be affected adversely and that could affect his work. Hence having a professional and indifferent culture in the workplace is essential for motivating and keeping employees satisfied.
The employees should get a feeling that they are growing professionally at work to get motivated. They should have an opportunity to learn and develop at all times through the work they do. Allocating the work to them should be challenging as per their potential. Just giving them the same work for a longer period of time can make things monotonous for them and demotivate them to give the same good results always. They can work better if the kind of work they get varies and lets them grow professionally.
The policies and rules of the company also play an important role in motivating employees. The employees will be more content and happy to work if the policies are formed keeping their interests in view and not just the company goals and profit earning factors are considered. The policies should also have a scope of alteration as per the convenience of the employees if they are not suitable for working efficiently. RIgid policies leave employees unhappy and stressed to work and give results.
