The leaders in the North knew that it was with great struggle that America became independent from the British Empire, thus, it was the need of the hour that the union stayed together. It would mean that slavery could be considered as one of the many reasons for the civil war and not the only reason. The proponents of the union wanted to control any deviation because of the fact that independence was achieved through many sacrifices to build a great nation.
