Birds and mammals have a four chambered heart that helps in the separation of oxygen rich and oxygen poor blood and does not allows it to mix together. The heart is divided into the right and left atrium and the left and the right ventricle.The right side of the heart contains the deoxygenated blood and the left side of the heart contains the oxygenated blood.

deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart travels via the pulmonary artery to the lungs, then returns as oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart via the pulmonary vein. Also the oxygenated blood from the left ventricle travels via aorta and enters the arteries and capillaries where it supplies the body's tissues and organs. Deoxygenated blood returns via veins to the venae cavae, re-entering the heart's right atrium.

This circulatory system is more efficient and helps in maintaining a constant body temperature. Oxygen is required for the breakdown of glucose which provides energy to the body in the form of ATP to carry out the complex metabolic processes of the body. During this breakdown of glucose energy is also released as heat which helps in maintaining the constant body temperature so these higher metabolic activities requires the fine separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.

mammals and birds have to take up a complex life style in mainating their body temperature. They convert the food that they eat into energy. Thus, they have to eat a lot of food,as compared to cold-blooded animals, to maintain a constant body temperature. Also only a small amount of the food they eat is converted into body mass. The rest is used as fuel to maintain a constant body temperature. They also need to eat very often to meet the high energy demands. Also they are required to eat high energy foods such as seeds,fruits,insects etc.
