Why might we have missed the presence of shadow life on our planet thus far?
Shadow life is a hypothetical realm of micro-organisms that have different biochemistry from the one shared by life as we know it. It is based on the idea that life originated in earth multiple times some of which had different biochemistry from standard life. Probable candidates of shadow life include microbes which utilize on-standard amino acids, having alternate molecular units in their nucleic acids etc.
Standard life or life as we know it utilize a common chemistry based on DNA, RNA and proteins. While searching extreme and remote areas for life, scientists look for signs for conform to standard life. Therefore life forms with different mechanism (shadow life) may not be detected.
