True or False: In chromatography, as the particle size of the solid phase increases, the number of theoretical plates increases. Please explain.
Ans : False
Efficiency of the chromatography column increases as the number of theoretical plates increase , so more the plates , greater is the column height and hence more efficient is the chromatography process.
So if the size of particles is too small , a more efficient column is required to seperate the particles , as larger particles are otherwise easier to seperate. So as the particle size of the solid phase increases , the number of theoretical plate decreases.

Define stationary phase. O Area where the points don't move on the chromatography paper O A solvent or mixture of solvents that flows over the moving phase. A solid phase of the system usually composed of a small piece of clay. porcelain, cellulose or other material 7. value: Required information 10.00 points The separation of a mixture occurs using chromatography because each substance in the mixture will be adsorbed to a different degree on the surface of the stationary phase....

Define the terms mobile phase, adsorbent, and solid support in terms of a general chromatography experiment.
2. In chromatography, “all compounds spend the same amount of time in the mobile phase” True or false? Explain your answer. [5 marks] 3. You are investigating if a mineral water drink has been spiked with a weak organic acid drug substance (Ka = 5 x10-4 ). In order to extract the substance, you extract the aqueous sample with octanol. Calculate the distribution ratio D at pH 3.0 if the KD is 40.
As you increase the gas chromatography column temperature, analytes’ ______________ increases and stationary phase solubility _______________. A) boiling point; increases B) vapor pressure; decreases C) vapor pressure; increases D) retention time; increases E) retention time; decreases
8. In reference to ion chromatography, indicate if the following statements are true (T) or false (F): A. Retention times are typically increased for large, multiply charged ions, due to increased ion-pairing interactions with the stationary phase. B. Following the adsorption of analytes to the stationary phase, the mobile phase is typically modulated from weak (OM NaCl) to strong (IM NaCl) elute compounds in order of their ion-pair interactions formed. C. The mobile phase has no role in altering or...
