The introduction of Huckel approximations by Huckel in 1931 gave scope to successfully apply the Molecular Orbital Theory to large conjugated systems. The Huckel method considers only the delocalized p - electrons moving in pi-bonds.

The Huckel Approximation is used to find the energies and shapes of the pi - molecular orbitals in conjugated systems. The Huckel method separated the covalent bonding into two frameworks, one is "" - bonding frame work and other one is "" - bonding frame work.

Limitations of Huckel Method:

  1. Huckel theory is very approximate.
  2. Huckel theory cannot calculate the molecular orbital energies accurately.
  3. Huckel theory cannot calculate the electron - electron repulsions.
  4. Huckel theory cannot estimate the predicted dipole moments correctly.
