The rate of telomerase activity is assumed to be high in stem cells and cancer cells. It is because telomerase protects the ends of telomeres. The telomeres get shorten after every cycle of DNA replication. For the maintenance of chromosome, the presence of telomeres is important.

And telomeres are considered important for the survival of cancer cells. This can be attributed to the reason that telomeres prevent the fusion of the ends of chromosome and they also prevent their recognition as site of DNA damage.
