Need a response comment to the statement below about mentorship:

Having a professional mentor to guide both young and seasoned, aspiring leaders in their quest for confidence and competence, is one of the most effective methods for developing human talent. As I recall the yesterday years of my ascension up the organizational ladder, I remember having influential senior leaders that mentored me by sharing their wisdom and providing trusted counsel on various subject matters. Most often, these senior/executive leaders fostered my skill development and networking opportunities through their mentorship.

Not all mentorships occur in the workplace. In my distant past, I’ve had family members, professors, and friends who have served as mentors/coaches in my personal development. These individuals provided encouragement, feedback, ideas, and shared their perspectives on life’s many lessons and challenges. As problems arose, I was able to turn to these coaches/mentors and we collectively solved problems and developed action plans for my personal growth.

Through my personal and professional mentorships, I have evolved from the plateau of a timid child to the upper echelon of a gregarious, influential mentor. Today, I serve as a mentor for others and together we: (1) identify opportunities for coaching growth and establish goals for development in those areas; (2) participate in group discussions/touchpoints regarding various coaching topics; and (3) share coaching best practices with each other. I’ve provided my mentees with tools and resources to increase their competencies in: 1) conflict resolution; 2) professional communication and etiquette; 3) team formation; 4) DISC training; 5) decision making by consensus; 6) careful selection; 7) coaching others; 8) lean manufacturing; 9) motivating others; 10) empowering and engaging employees; 11) performance development; and 12) seven leadership standards.

In all, I would argue that my past mentor experiences have positively impacted my personal and professional life. Furthermore, as a life-long learner, I have found that I am still growing my current capabilities as I serve as a mentor for young and seasoned individuals alike.

The above post highlights the role of mentorship in developing talent among individuals who through getting mentored are able to develop more skills and competence for getting promoted to the upper positions in the organizational ladder.

As the author has reflected on the personal experience of him acting both as mentor as well as protege which has had a positive impact on his life, however I am of the opinion that all mentorship programs dp not necessarily result in success neither does every mentor act in the dire support and guidance to their protege.

Mentorship also involves bias, prejudice and perception errors and other cognitive errors which might distort the process of learning, therefore I believe although mentorship has proved very positive and beneficial for the author to upgrade his skills and continuously learn in the process,,,,, every other person might not necessarily have the same past experience as it largely depends on who the Mentor is and what his priorities are.

But I do agree with the opinion that mentorship helps not only in acquiring and fostering new skills and developing networks, but also enables to live the experiences which their seniors have gone through,,, to protect oneself from committing the mistakes which they have have committed in their previous experiences.

The author further reflects on how he conducts the role of a mentor which entails coaching juniors through group discussions. I consider it appropriate to encourage personnel in learning while taking others along in the process.

Moreover the tools mentioned can also to a very great extend make individuals self learning and self growing through acquiring and sharing expertise.
