Although each ion in a sodium chloride crystal has six nearest neighbors, the value of the lattice energy for NaCl(s), 1.28 aJ per formula unit, is only about one and a half times the magnitude of the coulombic energy per NaCl ion pair of 0.816 aJ. Why do you think the vaue of the energy for NaCl(s) isn't about six times that of the coulombic energy per ion pair?

In NaCl coulombic interaction occur between single Na+ and single Cl- , there is totally attraction force while NaCl lattice is formed by large no. of Na+ and Cl- ions (as shown in image uploaded) there is 6 Cl- near by 1 Na+ and 6Na+ near by 1 Cl- ion. lattice is formed by complete arrangement of attractive and repulsive forces but overall force of attraction is greater than repulsion force this is because repulsion occur between 2 Na+ and between 2 Cl- ions which is at more distance than Na+ ---- Cl- . So, due to presence of this repulsive force lattice energy of NaCl lattice is not 6 times than coulombic energy.
