The purpose for which the gamma rays are used to control the mictobial control is that the radiation are used to kill or also may be able to inhibit the growth of the microbes which helps in the microbial control.

Also on the other hand the gamma radiations are also helpful to sterlize the material due to which the chances of the microbial growth will gets reduced.
