Design a reinforced concrete beam that has a rectangular cross section with a width b = 24 in. The
depth h is limited by architectural reasons to 16 in. It has to carry a factored moment Mu = 360 kip-
ft. including the self-weight. The design should satisfy ACI 318 for tension controlled members.
Use Grade 60 steel and a specified concrete compressive strength
= 4,000 psi. Determine the
flexural reinforcement for the beam, and use compression steel if needed. Allow 3 in. to the center
of the bars from the tension or compression face of the beam. The beam has No. 4 stirrups. Show
a sketch of the beam cross section. The clear spacing between the longitudinal bars should be no
less than 1 in. and the minimum concrete cover is 1-1/2 in.

    2. A beam with the following cross section has to be designed to resist factored positive moment demand, Mu, equal to 1500 kip-in. Due to architectural reasons, the dimensions of the section are pre-defined as below. Also, only #8 and #9 bars can be used as longitudinal reinforcement and #4 bars as transverse reinforcement. The specified cover is 2". The compressive strength of the concrete is 4000 psi and grade 60 is used for the steel bars. The cross section...
