jQuery is not a language. It's a tool used within a language. It so happens that you can accomplish some pretty impressive things in jQuery without knowing very much about JavaScript, but you still need to know something. Luckily, JavaScript is a remarkably simple language. we should keep in mind that the DOM is not JavaScript either, and deep understanding of it is not needed to use jQuery successfully. The DOM is simply another tool for JavaScript programmers (a very, very poorly designed tool). Understanding how functions, variables, closures, and objects work in JavaScript is important to writing code using jQuery, and should not take much to understand.
