A rectangular foundation with dimensions of B=2 m and L=5 m is to be constructed on a 6 m thick saturated layer of clay. Depth of foundation is 1 m and the undrained strength parameters of clay are ?? = 130 ??? and ?? = 0. The ground water table (GWT) is 1 m below the ground surface and unit weight of clay can be assumed as 19 ??/?3 above and below GWT.

a) For a factor of safety of 2.8 against shear failure of the footing, calculate the gross load that can be applied to the foundation.

b) If the allowable settlement of the footing is 25 mm, calculate the maximum gross load that can be carried by the foundation, ignoring the immediate settlement. The representative coefficient of volume compressibility of clay is ?? = 1.4 ∗ 10−4 ?2 / ??. c) Assuming the gross load on the foundation 3500 kN, calculate the safety factor against shear failure.
