A Drill Problem. When drilling a 13.1 mm diameter hole in wood, plastic, or aluminum, a shop manual recommends a drill speed of 1150 rev/min.

(a) For a 13.1 mm diameter drill bit turning at a constant 1150 rev/min, find the maximum linear speed of any part of the bit
m/s
(b) For a 13.1 mm diameter drill bit turning at a constant 1150 rev/min, find the maximum radial acceleration of any part of the bit.

Answer #1

d = 13.1mm = 0.0131m
Witch means that the r = d/2 , r=0.00655 m

We know the formula: a= v^2/r = 4π2r/T2

So what we need to find is T, witch is the time the drill uses to on 1 rev, in seconds.
60sec/1150rev=0.05217 s

Now we can solve the last part of the formula:
a = 4π2r/T2
a = 4 x π2 x(0.00655)/(0.05217)2=94.91 m/s2

Now we can find the speed by using the second part of the formula:
v2/r=94.91
v2=94.91 x r
v= 1.115 m/s
